Public Participation

In accordance with National Park Service guidelines for preparation of state historic preservation plan's, the Historic Preservation Field Services Bureau (State Historic Preservation Office) has conducted numerous public outreach activities. These have included:

  • Overview of public outreach process to date
  • Five professional conference presentations, including the Upstate Chapter of the American Planning Association in Binghamton; Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation and Certified Local Governments in Saratoga Springs; New York Planning Federation in Saratoga Springs; Heritage Development Forum in Troy; Association of Regional Planning Commissions in Syracuse.
  • Creation and strategic use of a 19 member advisory committee with statewide representation from various state agencies, organizations and areas of expertise.
  • Planning workshops with the State Review Board for Historic Preservation.
  • Approximately 200 brief "intercept survey" responses from visitors to the New York State Fair in Syracuse.
  • Historic preservation planning web content.
  • Written comments from at least 28 organizations and individuals.

More than 1,000 people have participated in the planning and outreach process so far, including mayors, town supervisors, other municipal elected officials and staff, preservation professionals, state agency staff, news media, preservation students, realtors, representatives of historic houses and other museums, heritage areas and scenic byways, state historic sites, archeologists, municipal historians, arts organization staff, developers, architects, planners, community and economic development professionals, lawyers, interested individuals, and many others.

As the state historic preservation plan is finalized, draft documents will continue to be posted on this web site. We welcome written comments.
