Clinton Square

Clinton Square In cooperation with the City of Syracuse and other local, state, and federal partners, the State Historic Preservation Office assisted in the preservation and revitalization of Clinton Square in downtown Syracuse. During the 19th century, the area, with its prominent location on the Erie Canal, served as one of the city's most important centers for transportation and commerce. Throughout its history, the square was the focus of a variety of activities, from business to recreation.During the early 20th century, the Soldiers and Sailors' monument was constructed on the square, which was designated a park in 1915. Later, the canal was filled in and Clinton Square became a major vehicular transportation route.

Clinton Square Today, with federal transportation funding and strong local support, the square has been transformed into a spectacular public gathering space. The project involved closing a section of Erie Boulevard and creating a large reflecting pool and outdoor performance area on the site of the Erie Canal. The SHPO provided technical assistance throughout the project's environmental review process and, with the help of a state preservation grant, oversaw the restoration of the Soldiers and Sailors' Monument.
