New York State Historic Preservation Office State and National Registers of Historic Places Web Page Introduction

The New York State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is a bureau of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The SHPO houses and maintains a broad range of information relating to historic properties in New York State including historic buildings, structures, sites, districts, and objects. The SHPO includes in its mission a responsibility to provide this information to municipalities, state and federal agencies, and the general public for the purposes of planning and research.

The State and National Registers of Historic Places web page provides the user with digital images of documents associated with these programs. These documents include more than 4000 State and National Register of Historic Places nomination forms and their associated photographs. Users can search for nominations by property name, location, county, National Register criteria, area(s) of significance, and/or historic use as well as by other criteria.

The document imaging data base is extensive, but does not contain a complete set of New York's register nominations. The collection reflects those nominations and images currently in the possession of the New York SHPO and considered to be public documents.

In some instances nominations dealing with archeologically sensitive areas may not be available through this program. The precise location of these sites is protected by law and as such cannot be depicted on this web site.

Accessing the New York State and National Register of Historic Places web pages cannot serve as a substitute for consultation with the SHPO for projects reviewed under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 or Section 14.09 of the State Historic Preservation Act of 1980.
