Long Island Region
From the world-famous Jones Beach to the great golfing opportunities at Bethpage State Park, Long Island is
gifted with some of the best parks and recreational facilities in the country. Long Island's 20 state parks
and historic sites attract nearly 20 million visitors annually.
Jones Beach State Park serves as the centerpoint of parks on Long Island, with its 6.5 miles of white sand
beach along the Atlantic Ocean, beautiful boardwalk, a newly reconstructed 15,000-seat concert facility, the
newly-opened Castles in the Sand exhibit -- which outlines the development of Long Island's state parks and
parkways by Robert Moses -- and a world-class fireworks program on Independence Day. Bethpage State Park boasts
five, 18-hole golf courses, including the newly renovated and world-class Black Course, which will host the
2009 US Open. Reservations are needed. See the golf section of this guide for further details about golfing on
Long Island.
Anglers are lured by world-famous fly-fishing in the same waters fished by presidents at Connetquot River
State Park Preserve. Salt water fishing is available at Captree State Park's famous fishing port from its dock,
boat launch or fishing fleet. The sweeping lawns, formal gardens and 65 room Tudor style Gold Coast mansion of
Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park will take visitors back to an age of splendor and beauty.
Campsites are available at Heckscher, Hither Hills and Wildwood State Parks, and history and literature buffs
can glimpse into the past of American poet Walt Whitman at the Walt Whitman Birthplace.
