Hempstead Lake State Park is a multi use facility. Included are 20 tennis courts, children's playgrounds, basketball courts, bridle trails for horse back riding, biking and hiking trails, shaded picnic areas and a historic hand carved wooden carousel. There is a picnic pavilion available for large parties. In addition to a pavilion rented through the Permit Department, Hempstead offers rental of the Carousel party-room done in-house at the park. For a rental fee of $350.00 for a three hour event, guests are also offered unlimited carousel rides during their event.
There are three ponds that are accessible for fishing. On Hempstead Lake, the largest lake in Nassau County, you are permitted to use car top boats with an annual permit issued from the Park. McDonald Pond, South Pond and Hempstead Lake are stocked with trout in the fall and you may target trout year-round. Other species present include large mouth bass, chain pickerel, black crappie, perch, tiger muskies, carp and sunfish.
Dogs only. Access in dog-walk area only, on a leash not more than 6 feet. Not allowed in camping, bathing and picnic areas. Not allowed in buildings or on walkways.
Most New York State Parks charge a vehicle use fee to enter the facility. Fees vary by location and season. A list of entry fees and other park use fees is available below. For fees not listed or to verify information, please contact the park directly.

This year's program will run from Friday, July 1 through Tuesday, September 6, 2016 from 4-8pm. Registration will begin on May 1 and continue until June 30 or until the 384 maximum participants is reached. Applications can be submitted in person at the Park Office in Field 2 at Hempstead Lake State Park daily or by mail to: Tennis Tournament, Hempstead Lake State Park, P. O. Box 66, West Hempstead, NY 11552. Applications are available at the park or can be downloaded at www.nysparks.com.
The tournament is open to all ages and ability levels. All entries must be made using the official entry form and be submitted with payment and a signed mandatory release form. Checks should be made payable to the Natural Heritage Trust-Long Island. The fees are $12 for singles and $15 for doubles teams. The entry fee also entitles the participant to a tournament t-shirt. Sizes are guaranteed for those who apply before June 15, 2016.
Trophies will be given to the first place and second place finishers in the following divisions: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles. USLTA approved balls must be supplied by the participants.
Entry Fee for Tier 1 opens April 1st to the first 2,500 entrants and includes all 8 races - $70.00 individual registration. Tier 2 opens to the first 1,500 entrants when Tier 1 reaches capacity and includes 4 races only – individual registration is $55.00.

Family-oriented annual fishing festival integrates fishing with fall activities, such as a casting for pumpkins contest and pumpkin decorating. The event also includes fly fishing instruction, demonstrations, and outdoor exhibits by local fishing clubs. Fishing equipment is not necessary. Loaner rods are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Children will also enjoy pony rides, face painting, and a magic show.
